Arrest after whitebaiting brawl

A Westport man allegedly pushed over a local woman this morning in a bid to secure a prime whitebaiting spot on the Buller River.

Constable Georgie Were said the woman called police about 8am, an hour after the incident near the Westport Domain.

Police arrived soon after and arrested the man for threatening behaviour.

However, a fight broke out between the man and the woman's son when he returned to pick up his fishing gear.

Police then arrested the woman's son for fighting too.

Both men, aged in their 30s, are due to appear before the Westport District Court next month.
