Auckland archaeologist Sue Bulmer was awarded Living Legend status by Auckland City Mayor Dick Hubbard last night.
Dr Bulmer heads the Friends of Mangawhau group and has been involved with preserving other volcanic cones.
Architect Don McRae, community workers Sylvia Fausett, Betty Malcolm and Mary Healy and Pacific Island leader the Rev Leuatea Sio were also made Living Legends.
The Living Legend awards are one step down from the Distinguished Citizen Award given to Sir Edmund Hillary and arts philanthropist Jenny Gibbs.
