Appreciation for volunteers

After 20 years' volunteering for the Heart Foundation Wairarapa branch, John Allan says he'll keep doing it for as long as he can.

Mr Allan has helped sort through tens of thousands of books, donated for the foundation's annual book fair fundraiser since 1994, and picks the best and rare books out to sell on Trade Me.

Heart health advocate Kit Cohr recognised Mr Allan for his long service, and said in the past five years, his work alone raised $50,000.

"He is totally dedicated to the books and to the foundation."

Mr Allan said he had plenty of help from 13 volunteers who sorted through books, once a week. "It's very much based on team work, books are heavy things."

Jacquey Barber was also recognised for 12 years' service, for her roles as office assistant, branch secretary and book fair co-ordinator.

The pair were thanked along with many other volunteers by the foundation at an appreciation event yesterday.

The number of hours they put in every month equates to two full-time staff members - the largest contribution out of all the branches in the country.

Ms Cohr highlighted the 69 volunteers who collected $5000 during Heart Week and their work at many other events.
