American Friends of Christchurch has presented New Zealand with a $2.7 million cheque to go towards the earthquake relief effort.
United States Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said many Americans were in Christchurch during the February 22 quake and the tragedy touched his country.
"We continue to follow developments
closely," he said.
Accepting the cheque in Auckland this afternoon, Foreign Minister Murray McCully said New Zealand had greatly appreciated the support from the United States.
"There has no country that has shown the material support for the people of Christchurch that the American people have."
