Alleged thieves bungle escape attempt

Four Gisborne men allegedly involved in a raid on cars in Napier last night were arrested after crashing their own car while trying to escape from police.

A police spokesman said police were alerted when the men were seen by a resident breaking into a car.

A brief car chase ended when the car the men were in crashed and their escape attempt was thwarted by a police dog and a chase on foot.

All were charged and will appear in Napier District Court today.
