Algal blooms, looking like red jelly, have appeared in the sea off Auckland as summer approaches. The non-toxic blooms are at Cape Rodney, in the Leigh and Ti Point area and on the north side of Waiheke Island.
Auckland Regional Council water quality manager Eddie Grogan said the bloom washarmless to people, but boats passing through its jelly-like substance could suffer clogged engine filters. Two years ago, the bloom completely covered Leigh Harbour. The bloom looks like a pink milk pudding in concentrated patches, and causes phosphorescent waves at night.
