Algal bloom in second Huntly lake

Environment Waikato has found a potentially deadly algal bloom in a second Huntly lake.

The bloom was identified in Lake Waahi on Thursday. The same bloom has now been found in Lake Hakanoa, where a public health warning was already in place for a separate species of blue-green algae.

Water from Hakanoa, Kainui (Ngaruawahia), Rotoroa (Hamilton) and Ngaroto (Te Awamutu) Lakes was tested at Waikato University at the weekend. The potentially fatal strain of blue-green algae has been found in New Zealand only once before.
