Air New Zealand domestic travellers will soon have to identify themselves when they check in because of security concerns.
From the end of next month travellers will need some kind of photo identification, such as a driver's licence, passport, student ID card or "recognised form of company ID".
Online booking and electronic tickets have made it possible for one person to book a ticket but another to board the plane.
For those people without photo ID, the airline will accept credit cards, birth certificates, community services cards and frequent flyer cards.
Children up to the age of 11 will not need their own identification, although their parents or guardians will be asked to verify identity.
Origin Pacific will not ask for photo ID. Airline chief executive Tony Marks said that in most cases the airline relied "on the integrity of the people coming and saying their name".
Qantas already asks for identification at domestic check-in.
