Air Force Hercules bursts tyre on landing

Wellington airport was closed briefly this morning after a Royal New Zealand Air Force Hercules burst a tyre on landing.

Airport spokesman Greg Thomas said the runway was closed so ground staff could inspect for any damage.

He said the debris was removed and the airport was open within five minutes with everything fully operational.

RNZAF maintenance staff were on their way to Wellington from Base Whenuapai in Auckland.

A Defence Force spokesperson said the burst tyre was a rare event and there was only minor damage to a wheel and the main landing gear door.

There were no injuries and the plane was safely brought to a stop with airport emergency services called as a normal precaution.
