Accused kidnapper denied bid for bail

A Manukau man accused of breaching a protection order three times had an application for electronically-monitored bail refused by a judge today.

Praneel Sharma is accused of kidnapping and assaulting his ex-partner.

He also faces a charge of obstructing or perverting the course of justice, along with allegedly breaching a protection order on three occasions.

Sharma denies all charges and will stand trial early next year.

Today, he made an application through his lawyer Kirsten Gray at Christchurch District Court to get bail.

Crown prosecutor Karyn South said police were "strenuously opposed" to the application.

And Judge Jane Farish denied Praneel's release on electronically-monitored bail.

She remanded him in custody until a Crown case review hearing on August 4. Judge Farish indicated that the trial would likely not be until early next year.
