A businessman has been granted access to the runway at Ohakea Air Base this weekend to make an attempt at the New Zealand land speed record that currently stands at 348.23km/h.
Depending on the conditions, Eddie Freeman's attempt will take place tomorrow or Sunday.
The existing record was set by
Owen Evans in 1996, a feat that nearly claimed Evans' life when he lost control of his Porsche 911 Turbo.
Freeman will attempt the record in a Lamborghini Superleggera, a supercar producing 530bhp and capable in its standard specification of a top speed of 315km/h.
The car has undergone major modifications at one of the world's leading automotive tuners in the US to prepare it for the attempt. The Supperleggera is now capable of producing close to 1500 rwhp (rear wheel horse power).
