Te Arawa's most respected elder, The Right Reverend Manuhuia Bennett, the former Anglican bishop of Aotearoa, died early this morning.
He had been battling ill health for several years and passed away at his Rotorua home, aged 85.
His body was to be moved to Te Arawa's paramount meeting house, Tamatekapua, early
this afternoon.
Close relative Sir Howard Morrison said the church leader had wanted to make it to Christmas.
"A totara has fallen in the forest of greatness and that's exactly where he fits in," Sir Howard said.
Descended from Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Pikiao and Ngati Rangitihi, he was involved in many areas of the community and would often officially open major concerts or events held in the Rotorua area.
His father, Bishop Fred Bennett, was also Anglican Bishop of Aotearoa.
He is survived by his wife Kaa (Kathleen).
