In this series, we wanted to find out who are our people in Te Tairāwhiti 250 years after the arrival of Lieutenant James Cook and his crew on the Endeavour, and what are the things that make up our community including insights, reflections, views and opinions. Pene Walsh, a descendant of the first settlers in the region, is proudly Pākehā. Some people do not like the word Pākehā, but she does and prefers this word to other terms. Pene was at the 200th anniversary of the arrival of Cook and she says it was all about him, but this time around it is different, and that’s a good thing. Pene shares her memories of growing up in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa and her take on the 250 Anniversary of the arrival of Captain Cook.
