A music-playing bottle? That must be some kind of record

The world's first music-playing beer bottle has been created in New Zealand.

Using modern technology, three minutes of music has been inscribed on the surface of a Beck's beer bottle to promote Kiwi band Ghost Wave's new album.

The bottle was the brainchild of Auckland creative agency Shine and was designed and made by model company Gyro Constructivists.

It is based on inventor Thomas Edison's 19th century cylinder phonograph. Shine's creative technologist Mathew Tizard, who came up with the idea, said it was a product that was gaining lots of interest from both the musical and technology world.

"It's appealing to a lot of different people. As far as we know, it's the world's first playable bottle and it's got people talking."

Only one music-playing beer bottle has been created so far, but there are moves to make more in the near future, Mr Tizard said. "There's lots of potential - maybe we'll start hiding them in six-packs first."
