82-year-old killed in a head-on crash named

The 82-year-old man killed in a head-on crash in Otago yesterday has been named.

He was Neville Westbrooke Squires of Riverton, police confirmed today.

Police say the crash happened when the driver of a Toyota SUV travelled into the path of Mr Squires' car while overtaking a northbound truck on State Highway 1 near Kuriwao, east of Clinton.

Mr Squires died at the scene and the female driver was taken to Dunedin Hospital, where she is still being treated.

Three passengers from the SUV are also still in Dunedin Hospital.

The driver of the SUV, a 26-year-old Singaporean tourist, appeared in the Dunedin District Court today on a charge of dangerous driving causing death.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear in court again tomorrow.

Balclutha police said they want to speak to the driver of the truck that was being overtaken, described as being red with silver trim on the side with a solid back and double doors.

It was travelling northbound at the time of the crash around 1.20pm.
