A 48-year-old man is to appear in court today charged with murder after a woman was attacked and killed on a service station forecourt.
Police were called to the Mobil Mart Service Station in the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville just before midnight on Saturday.
They found the woman lying on
the forecourt with "significant injuries".
Ambulance and fire service staff were not able to revive the woman, who has not been named.
Wellington CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell said the woman knew her attacker, who was eventually restrained by witnesses.
A homicide investigation had been started, he said.
"Our role is to fully investigate this death to clearly establish the facts and background leading up to it.
"This includes identifying and speaking with all the witnesses to this attack, of which there were a number."
