3-year-old boy drowns in river

A 3-year-old boy drowned yesterday while swimming at a river with a group of other children.

Police are investigating the death of the boy, who was swept downstream while swimming in the Whakatane River at Ruatoki.

Attempts to revive the boy were unsuccessful.
