A witness travelling in the opposite direction said just after midday that a “major traffic jam” remained on that stretch of the motorway.
By late afternoon, congestion in the area had eased.
Hato Hone St John confirmed it sent four ambulances and one manager to the scene.

Three victims were taken to Auckland City Hospital for treatment, and one was taken to Starship Children’s Hospital.
