A pedestrian died near Matamata last night after being hit by a car.

Waikato Police attended a fatal crash on State Highway 27, between Matamata and Waharoa shortly after midnight, after a vehicle hit a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was a 24-year-old man, who died at the scene.

Police say no further information is available while the man's next of kin are being informed.

The Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
