200,000 attend peaceful Auckland symphony

More than 200,000 people attended the Sky City Starlight Symphony in the Auckland Domain last night.

The crowd were entertained by stars such as Lucy Lawless, Dame Malvina Major and master of ceremonies John Hawkesby.

Former Auckland mayor Christine Fletcher and her husband, Angus, joined the 800-strong choir.

"I was certainly tested on the high notes…but it's a lovely feeling to be in sync with 800 other people," she said.

Highlights included fireworks exploding overhead, Auckland's Philharmonia, singer Hinewehi Mohi, snippets from the Auckland Theatre Company's "The Rocky Horror Show" and the prize giving for the Auckland leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Police reported no incidents.
