Wairarapa athletes made a huge impact at the Wellington regional secondary schools track and field championships at Newtown Park last week with no fewer than 18 titles falling to competitors from the region.

Dual successes were achieved in shot put and discus by Wairarapa College duo Alex Fafeita (senior boys) and Katie Smith (intermediate girls) and Chanel College's Lisa Makaohi (junior girls) and also by gun Wairarapa College middle distance runner Alison Andrews-Paul over 800m and 1500m.

Fafeita, who has represented New Zealand at age group levels, was one of a handful who came away from the meeting with a regional record to show for his efforts, setting a new mark of 17.11m in the shot put.

Starring over 100m for Wairarapa were Sian Chapman (Chanel), who won the junior girls' crown, and Alex Howden (Makoura) who did likewise in the senior boys, while Tom Quinn (Rathkeale) scored in the senior boys' 400m and the brother and sister combination of Kurtis and Stevie Paine of Wairarapa College won the intermediate boys' and senior girls' 800m events.

The field event programme was especially profitable for Wairarapa with wins from Finn Yeats (Rathkeale) in the junior boys' high jump, Kuranui's Toyah Churton and Connor Henare in the junior girls' and intermediate boys' triple jump and Evelyn Wilson-Bellshaw (St Matthew's) in the junior girls' javelin.
