A Fletcher subsidiary has been ordered to pay $170,000 in reparation and fines after one of its workers was killed in a sand bin. Graham Stuart Dick, 61, climbed into the bin at Firth Industries' concrete plant in Richmond, near Nelson, to clean it in September last year. He stood on the sand as a platform, but became engulfed in it and died. In Nelson District Court yesterday, Judge Tony Zohrab fined the company $45,000 and ordered it to pay $125,000 reparation, the Nelson Mail reported.
