A total of 157 Canterbury University staff are seeking voluntary redundancy.
The university wants to cut its 1500 academic and general staff by 4 per cent before the end of the year
Applications for voluntary severance closed at 5pm yesterday.
The university's employee relations manager, David Towns, said 26 academic and 131
general staff opted to take redundancy.
Heads of departments would be consulted and staff would know by December 12 if their applications had been accepted.
They would be given a week to consider again before being paid out and made redundant.
Mr Towns said various factors would be taken into account when confirming redundancies to ensure departments could continue to meet service or teaching commitments.
Most severance agreements would be effective from December 31.
A 4 per cent cut in the staff bill is needed because the university has been spending more than it has been funded.
