A 14-year-old has been caught drink-driving in Masterton.

The boy was stopped as part of a police sting overnight and blew 135 micrograms of alcohol a litre of breath.

Drivers under 20 aren't allowed to have any alcohol in their system.

The boy has been referred to police's youth aid section and the car he was driving has been impounded.

Of the 1028 motorists stopped at checkpoints in Masterton, three will face drink-driving charges.

Wellington district road policing manager Inspector Mike Wright said he was "astonished and disappointed" at the results.

"It is important that parents know what their children are up to," Mr Wright said of the 14-year-old.

"This young man put not just himself but many other people at risk."

Mr Wright urged people drinking to have a sober driver to get them home.

"We want don't want any unopened presents under the Christmas tree this year."
