Auckland police are pleased to see a reduction in drink driving numbers but say there are still too many motorists taking to the roads after drinking too much.
A police operation over the weekend resulted in more than 100 drivers charged with drink driving offences.
Counties Manukau Road Policing manager Inspector Heather Wells said 8412 vehicles were stopped over Friday and Saturday nights and 144 drivers would be going to court to answer charges of excess breath alcohol.
Ms Wells said it was still unacceptable to have this number of drink drivers on the roads.
During the weekend sting, bailiffs, who accompanied police, executed 67 warrants with outstanding fines amounting to $89,893.
They collected $7250 after 17 drivers paid their fines in full.
They also seized 53 vehicles from drivers, Ms Wells said.
Nine arrests were made for a variety of offences, such as stolen vehicles, dangerous driving, failing to stop and possession of drugs and 45 drivers had their licences suspended.
"The results from this weekend still show there are a percentage of drivers on our roads who show a total disregard for the safety of other road users," Ms Wells said.
"Police are committed to continue with this hard line approach to remove these high risk offenders to ensure safety for other road users."
