North Shore golfer Scott Johnson cemented his place in the North Harbour team for the Grant Clements Memorial at Mt Maunganui next weekend by winning the West Coast Open at Muriwai yesterday.
The 54-hole event was cut to 36 holes when heavy rain flooded the normally quick-draining fairways midway through the final round.
Johnson, a former national junior representative, made a break on the field with a four-under 68 in the first round.
He slipped to 76 in the second but retained a one-stroke margin over Maungakiekie veteran Arthur Parkin, who shot 74, 71.
Third on 146 was Daniel Robertson (Redwood Park), one ahead of former national champion Chris Johns (Omaha).
Johns, who has transferred from the Auckland association, will lead the North Harbour team for the Southland Invitational at Invercargill next month.
The team, in playing order, are: Johns, James Davis (North Shore), Johnson, Phil Mosley (North Shore) and Matthew Bray (Huapai). Robertson is the reserve. Davis will team with Johnson at the 72-hole Clements Memorial.
