Man in court over Palmerston North shooting

Jackson Skipper entered no plea and was remanded in custody until September.

A man charged over a shooting in the suburb of Highbury has appeared in court.

Jackson Skipper, 27, appeared before Judge Gerard Lynch in the Palmerston North District Court on Thursday afternoon, on one charge of discharging a firearm with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Skipper was initially called just before 2.30pm. However, this was delayed a short while after a policeman requested he be called at the end of the court list for "causing some issues" in the cells.

He entered no plea and was remanded in custody until September.

Police were called to reports of shots being fired in Ronberg St just after 5.14pm on Tuesday.

A 28-year-old man had been shot three times in the stomach.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and has since had surgery. He is due to be released later today.

Police were also looking for Levin man Wheturangi Tauhore. Detective Sergeant Grayson Joines said police believed the 25-year-old could assist with their enquiries.

"Police have had an excellent response from the public so far and would like to thank them for their assistance during this ongoing investigation.

"Police are still seeking a second person in relation to the incident and ask that anyone with information comes forward."

He urged Tauhore to make himself known to police and asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Palmerston North CIB on 06 351 3896.
