Improvisation makes for spectacular concert

The Globe Theatre is presenting a Sunday concert with a difference.

This week's show will have a focus on vocal jazz and will feature some local musicians.

'An afternoon of Swing, Latin, Ballads, Bebop and Jazz--Blues Standards with more than a sprinkling of Improvisation' will kick off at 2.30pm this Sunday.

Performers include Sue Pugmire, who sang her first solo at the age of 5. Sue is well-known in the city for her passion on various issues, and she extends this passion to her music. Sue joined a rock band at the age of 13 and two years later joined a folk band.

Sue also ran the Palmerston North folk club for 20 years. She has performed in London, Paris and Norway with bands and as a solo artist, and still performs many genres including her own compositions, political commentary and protest songs, children's songs, Folk, Rock and Blues and Jazz.

Chris Dann will also be taking the stage. Chris was introduced to jazz in 1979, and went on to join a band in 1981. Chris enjoys various types of music and is a member of Trio Bella who also features in the 2016 Globe concert series.

His son Michael will also feature this weekend. Michael recently completed a bachelor degree in jazz drumming. He enjoys playing in various styles and settings, and has won many awards for his musicianship.

Stephanie McKenzie has experience with a wide range of music ensembles, and was classically trained on clarinet before transferring her skills to saxophones and flute. Stephanie also teaches saxophone, clarinet, flute, fife and recorder privately as well as taking all the woodwind classes at Saturday Morning Music.

Matiu Whiting is a graduate of the New Zealand School of Music where he studied jazz and classical performance. He has played in a variety of musical situations and he likes playing guitar and talking in the third person.
