"It's really amazing for those who use Just Zilch to see someone like Metiria come here and help out. It's great to have that positive reinforcement and see her enthusiasm for what we do."
Just Zilch is giving out food to 196 people, on average, every day and relies solely on donated food. Ms Turei said this showed businesses within the community also had a social conscience when it came to wasting food.
"This is the other amazing thing. These businesses who donate have an interest in not wasting food. Places like Just Zilch remind me that communities know what solutions they need and it's my job as an MP to facilitate that decision making."
She said allowing people to be in control of the food they received was something unique.
"They treat people here with respect. You can come in here and keep your dignity. They're combining these contributions with that ability to let people come in, and have control over their food -- it's all part of the amazing service."
After rolling up her sleeves at Just Zilch, the MP was joined for some mulled wine around a fire, accompanied by some knitting.
"Crafting is really common among the younger generation. Younger people want to be more self-reliant, making their own things. I think it's a great connection."
Just Zilch is open Monday to Friday, 1.30pm--2.30pm and 4.30pm--7pm. For more information visit justzilch.org.nz.
