More than 70 per cent of men said hard work helped them to succeed, followed by perseverance and time, but only 30 per cent said family support gave them a step up.It was clear there was a "secret" to success, AMP chief customer officer Jeff Ruscoe said.
"While hard work is important when wanting to achieve your dream, it's clearly perseverance and determination which are the secrets to success.
"We're proud to be able to help men and women, young and old, to further their dreams and can't wait to meet this year's dream-makers."
Interestingly, for those whose goals don't work out, a lack of money and time could be to blame.
Eighty per cent of women said the main reason they missed their goals was down to a lack of finance, compared to 50 per cent of men. While both sexes identified time as another significant factor.
More females agree that "any age" is ideal when setting out to achieve something - with more than 80 per cent buying into the idea, compared to 70 per cent of males.
The research had been released to remind people there were only 10 days left to apply for an AMP Scholarships - which aim to help talented Kiwis achieve their own dreams, Mr Ruscoe said.
The AMP Scholarship programme has provided more than $2 million to help 160 Kiwis over the last 17 years.
