From "I was ashamed of getting fat" to "getting out of a traffic ticket", women have revealed the bizarre and shocking reasons why they've pretended to be pregnant.
In a candid thread on secret sharing app Whisper, anonymous users explain how they tricked their partners, friends, family and sometimes completestrangers into believing they were pregnant.
For many, the reason for their deceit was to manipulate a partner or ex-lover while others used the lie for more minor excuses.
One user posted: "I faked a pregnancy... And a miscarriage... Just so my boyfriend would propose to me".

Another said: "Freshman year of college I faked a pregnancy for a week to see if my ex would care. I was so desperate. He slid $500 under my door for an abortion."
One admitted to claiming she was pregnant because she was embarrassed about her weight gain.
She said: "I pretended to be pregnant because I was ashamed of getting fat."
One user announced she had been wearing a "fake pregnancy belt", but no longer needed to because she had genuinely fallen pregnant. Why she was trying to look pregnant when she wasn't is not explained.

Others used phantom gestation to get out of difficult situations.
One said: "I faked being pregnant to get my annoying roommate to move out" while another confessed: "I pretended to be pregnant to get my traffic ticket dropped."
For one, it was an indulgence in a hope they were desperate to make a reality: "I lied about being pregnant so many times because I really just wanted a baby," wrote one woman.
And in a self-fulling prophecy type scenario, a woman's pretend pregnancy turned out to not be so fake: "'I faked being pregnant so my managers would go easy on [me at] work. They asked me for proof and gave me a test. Turns out I was pregnant..."
