People have different reactions to seeing others argue in public settings: some might look for a way to remove themselves, others might move in closer for unobstructed viewing.
Eavesdropping may not be polite but when you are stuck waiting at an airport and a couple starts loudly arguing next toyou it can be hard to resist listening in.
This is exactly the situation that Kimber Dowsett, who goes by "mzbat" on Twitter, found herself in. The cause of the argument was so unbelievable she just had to share it online.
The topic of the spat was finances — a common point of disagreement among couples — but this wasn't just your regular old money worries.
According to Dowsett, the woman had been offered a promotion at work but her man didn't like the idea of her earning more money than him.
He reportedly wanted her to turn down the job and that is when things started to get intense.
Couple beside me at the airport is arguing over money. He just told her if she loved him she’d turn down the promotion bc everyone would know she’d be making more money than him and he’d be humiliated. Holy shit is that really still a thing? wtf
omg she’s crying and said she’d never do anything to jeopardize their relationship and he’s like “good then turn down the job” and I just want to punch him
He just told her once they’re married and have kids she wouldn’t be working anyway so there’s no point focusing on her career anyway and I’m rekt. I can’t believe this is 2017.
After this comment, Dowsett reported that the woman's reaction quickly changed from "not wanting to jeopardise the relationship" to throwing her plane ticket in his face.
OMG SHE WIPED HER TEARS & SAID “kids? who said anything about me ever wanting kids?!” pic.twitter.com/WrFXgAWIOz
Once the argument was over, Dowsett wrote a message of support for the unknown woman, urging her to continue chasing her dreams and to not let anyone hold her back.
Dear Brave Airport Lady, if you ever see this, just know that although I’m sorry you went through this (esp during the holidays), I hope that, one day, you look back on this as a defining moment in your life. Never settle. Follow your heart. You are a goddess. ❤️
The Twitter thread soon gained a lot of attention and people were quick to share their own messages of support for the mystery woman, with many of the responses being from people who are in a relationship where the woman earns more money.
I'm a stay at home dad for 2 great kids and I love and support my brilliant and compassionate wife who works as an emergency veterinarian making far more than I could ever hope to. I'm happy to support my family in my chosen roll and don't feel emasculated one bit.
As an unhappy lawyer, I career-changed in my 30s; My wife made much more than me for the next decade (by year 15 i caught up). This allowed me to engage in risk, launch a business, ramp up to 10X her salary. Would not have been possible if I cared she made more than me. #partners
