If your last memory of rosé was bunging a candle in an empty bottle of sweet, fizzy Mateus and thinking it really added to the atmosphere of your student flat, then it’s high time you stepped up to something more sophisticated. Here’s how to do it …
Rod McDonald One-Off Syrah Viognier Rosé 2015
When you blend a splash of about 7 per cent viognier (a white wine) into a snappy, dry, spicy rosé made from syrah, and then get all old-world on it by fermenting it with wild yeasts in old, seasoned barrels, you get a boatload
of character in what looks like a lightweight wine. Soft coral-pink colour, aromas of cranberry, redcurrant and white pepper and a mid-palate bursting with spicy richness make this a firm favourite. I like my rosé to have substance and strong bones - and it's a bonus that the bottle looks like money on the table. All boxes ticked.

Squawking Magpie Two For Joy Rosé 2015
According to the Squawking Magpies, "two for joy" is part of a rhyme that signifies
spying two magpies together will bring you joy. One thing is guaranteed, though, and that's that this merlot-based rosé will bring serious amounts of satisfaction if you're after a tangy, roast plum and berry burst from your wine. It has a layer of savoury richness and a creamy, slightly toasty note. Definitely one to pour if you're planning on putting out a platter of charcuterie for the guests - just don't serve it too cold, that'll stifle the spices.

Ti Point Ruby Matakana Coast Rosé
Ruby is the name of winemaker Tracy Mason's eldest daughter, a talented tween showjumper and motorbike rider, fearless and gorgeous and loads of fun to be around. So it's fitting that this wine - packed with fresh, bright berries, tangy pomegranate and creaming soda characters - is named after her, because it's got loads of personality and has the potential to wow people. There's a hint of marshmallow on the finish, injecting a touch of sweetness and it really opens up in the glass. Nice stuff indeed.
