Fast fitness

Can't find time to exercise? Auckland Pools and Leisure are specially tailoring 30-minute fitness programmes for busy people who can't find the time to exercise. Research conducted by the organisation found time is one of the biggest barriers to fitness. "This has been designed for people who find it hard to fit exercise into their busy lives," said Fitness Centre Manager, Matt Nash. "The idea is simple - 30-minute sessions tailored to you and your goals." Stick it out for three months and you'll get 30 days free.

Free to join before June 5.

Tahuna break-up

Tahuna Breaks.
Tahuna Breaks.

Auckland reggae band Tahuna Breaks will surf their last bass line tonight, after more than a decade together. The 10-piece group got together in 2005, and are named after Freemans Bay's Tahuna St, where they had their first jam. "Sadly the curtain will be drawn for the last time after this show but we would like to extend much thanks and gratitude to all those that have supported and shared this journey with us," the band wrote on Facebook. They will perform two sets tonight, one acoustic and an "hour of power" with the full band and guests.

Today, 8.30pm, Studio The Venue Limited, 340 Karangahape Rd. Tickets at nonstoptix.com.

Piano man

Renowned pianist David Guerin will give a special one-off performance with St Matthew's Chamber Orchestra. Mozart's Piano Concerto No 9 K271 in E flat major will be performed by the maestro, who is also a private piano teacher and lecturer at the University of Auckland's School of Music. The concerto has been called "the first unequivocal masterpiece of the classical style", with plenty of room for a soloist to play. St Matthew's Chamber Orchestra often play to a full house, so get there early.

Tomorrow, 2.30pm. St Matthew-in-the-City, corner of Wellesley St and Hobson St.

PLAN AHEAD

Next week: Spanish fest

Hola amigos! Brush up on your "como se llama" or just take the opportunity to watch a good film at the opening weekend of the NZ Spanish Film Festival. This year's fest boasts 15 Spanish language films from countries including Spain, Argentina and Guatemala. Highly anticipated is the tantalisingly named Embrace the Serpent, the story of two European explorers and their journey through the Amazon in search of a rare flower. Also showing is Thin Yellow Line, the tale of a former construction worker who lives off the grid in Mexico.

May 19 -June 5, Academy Cinema, 44 Lorne St. See academycinemas.co.nz

Next week: Alchemy

Four Kiwi singers, a melting pot of great tracks - a one-off concert next weekend promises to transform the best New Zealand pop music of the past few decades into soulful jazz. Singers Ria Hall, Anna Coddington, Tami Neilson and Julia Deans will perform alongside a seven-piece jazz band in a concert they're calling Alchemy. The two-hour show features new arrangements of songs made famous by Split Enz, Lorde, Herbs, Dave Dobbyn, Shona Laing, The Crocodiles, Crowded House, The Swingers, Hello Sailor, Prince Tui Teka, Dragon and more.

May 21, 8pm. Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell. Tickets at ticketmaster.co.nz or ph 0800 111 999 or iticket.co.nz

Next month: Cheers to that

It has been named one of the world's top 20 beer festivals by American publication Beer Connoisseur, and this year the GABS Beer Festival is coming to Auckland. Already a mainstay of the Melbourne and Sydney social calendar, the fest will take over the ASB Showgrounds on June 18. Begun in 2011 by the guys behind Australia's The Local Taphouse beer bars, the festival is a celebration of craft beer showcasing hundreds of brews.

There's also food, beer and food education, activities and entertainment.

June 18, noon-11.30pm, ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane.
