Whether you stayed up late watching three episodes of The Good Wife instead of one, accidentally finished the whole bottle of red or got lost in an internet well of stupid videos about Chihuahuas using neck massagers, a cup of coffee is an early morning panacea for many workers, vital to stifling 11am yawns.

It seems a caffeine injection is more important in some professions than others however, as a poll by Pressat has revealed.

Journalists were found to be consuming the most coffee (this is lies, I subsist entirely on Um Bongo), followed by police officers and teachers.

Other stereotypically high stress careers feature in the top 10, including medical staff and company executives, while plumbers and builders came in fourth - flying in the face of their purported love of tea.

Of the 10,000 professionals surveyed, 85 per cent admitted to drinking at least three cups of coffee a day, while 70 per cent said that they believe their work performance would be affected without it.

The findings make for quite depressing reading really, especially given that drinking copious amounts of coffee to kick start your system is repeatedly linked in studies with risks to health.

Here's the top 10 professions by coffee consumption:

1. Journalists and media staff

2. Police officers

3. Teachers

4. Plumbers and trade workers
