Wasp found embedded in chocolate

A wasp has shown up in an unusual place - embedded into a bar of Whittaker's Chocolate.

Wellington woman Casey Taylor posted an image of the insect that was found in a block of Whittakers Pear and Manuka Honey chocolate to the company's Facebook page last night.

Ms Taylor received the entire Whittaker's range of artisan chocolate flavours as part of a birthday present from her husband Andrew, who discovered the wasp when he snuck into her stash.

"Initially I thought, 'oh, what is he doing digging into my birthday chocolate' and then I realised he actually saved me from crunching into the wasp," she told 3 News.

In a response on Facebook, Whittaker's said the find was "very unusual".

Whittaker's said they would be stopping the production of the product in question while they investigate what happened.

"We believe this is an isolated incident, but have taken the precautionary measure of halting the production line of this product, and immediately began investigating how it could have happened.

"The customer was very understanding, and we will of course be sending them a replacement block along with some of our other products they are a fan of.

"We have very robust, best practice quality control processes in place, and it is extremely rare for instances like this to occur.

"We are taking the situation very seriously as is reflected by the immediate actions we have taken."

The chocolate was part of a new line of artisan flavours released by Whittaker's recently.
