You might think that meals with a higher price tag are guaranteed to be better quality but a top chef vehemently disagrees.
Indeed, James Briscione, director of culinary research at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York, has revealed there are three specific meals you should steer clear ofwhen dining at a fancy restaurant.
Speaking to Insider, James revealed that you should never order a "fancy" burger, well-done meat or anything with truffles on because they're a complete waste of your money.
Why you should never order a "fancy" burger:
James says that you should never pay over £20 for a burger and claims that if the chef piles 'expensive' ingredients - like luxurious cheeses or truffle shavings - on top of classic burgers, they are just trying to 'steal' your money.
He explained that the best burgers are made using tough cuts such as chuck, brisket or ribs so it's a waste of money for chefs to ground down the most expensive cuts and charge you more for it.
Why you should never order well-done meat:
Not everyone loves their steak cooked rare but James said you'll risk having a worse cut of meat if you ask for it well-cooked.
Unless you're elderly or pregnant, he says the chef won't take kindly to your request and will serve you thin or tough cut pieces of meat, taking little care over the cooking of it.
Why you should never order anything with truffle oil:
James says that you should avoid ordering anything with truffle oil on it.
He maintains that the chef often drizzles '20p worth' (40c) of imitation truffle flavoured oil onto your food and adds plenty on to the price as a result.
