Considered the biggest and most glamourous of the entertainment world's award shows, this year's Oscars red carpet saw an array of prettily frilled dresses in jewel tones and delicate pastels.

An abundance of fabrics were paraded in trains, capes and odd Origami twists, bringing us a mix of regal statement gowns and of course, fashion fails.

Here are our best and worst dressed from the 2016 Oscars red carpet:

1. Sofia Vergara

Vergara looks regal in midnight blue accentuated in all the right places.

2. Louise Roe

Roe's choice is pastel perfection in floating peach frills set against a sleek silhouette.

3. Mindy Kaling

A clever use of colour, Kaling cuts a sexy shape in black while making a statement with her cobalt cape.

4. Daisy Ridley

Star Wars stunner Daisy Ridley's choice of cute frills, ankle grazing hem and pop of a red lip was a refreshing sight on the carpet.

5. Brie Larson

From the colour to the ethereal fabric to the cut, Larson's bold choice is a winner.

6. Cate Blanchett

Blanchett's powder blue gown is sleek, delicate, and intriguing.

7. Sam Smith

A shadow of his former self, the very trim Sam Smith cut a slick figure on the red carpet.

Worst

1. Alicia Vikander

An example of when channeling a Disney princess is taken too far, Vikander's buttery, puff-hemmed dress was reminiscent of Belle from

in a bad way.

2. Sophie Turner

There's not much saving this one for Sophie Turner. The dress is ill-fitting, the neckline doesn't work and the colour is a wash out with her pale complexion.

3. Olivia Wilde

An example of accordion pleats in all the wrong places, Wilde's white number doesn't work.

4. Jennifer Jason Leigh

With a fair amount of competition in the pastels and ruffles stakes this year, Leigh's dress looked a little like a cake with fondant frills.

5. Heidi Klum

There's just too much going on with this supermodel's ensemble.

6. Michael Strahan

While we admire the attempt at something a little different, Strahan's take on a Mad Men vibe doesn't quite measure up to the dapper of Don Draper.
