She lifted her head off her hands long enough to give me a nasty look. Without her saying a word I knew what she was thinking - "you little suck up." She always accused me of trying to get on Mom's good side, doing things to please her,being a "mama's boy." Maybe that was true, but only compared to Beth. Lately she seemed to go out of her way to fight with Mom. It should have been the two of them who promised to try to get along. They were always bickering about something. I just kept my head down and tried to stay out of the way when they got into one of their real fights. And there'd been a lot of them lately. Beth was only thirteen, but lately she'd been acting like she thought she was a lot older. She'd started wearing make-up and was caught skipping school. Mom nearly killed her for that - nothing bothers a teacher more than having one of her own kids cut classes.
