They took the lift to the top floor of the building and ran down the emergency stairs from floor fourteen to floor twelve. The number of steps between twelve and fourteen was the same as between the other floors.
"That's that," said Abby.
But Todd still had a feeling that
floor thirteen was somewhere in the building. "Maybe it's hidden," he said.
"We could ask Keith," suggested Abby.
Keith, the caretaker, wore orange overalls and canvas shoes with flowers painted on them. When Keith walked, he clanked louder than the lift, because he carried so many keys on his belt. No one knew how old he was. When children asked his age, he would say, "Older than a tree and younger than the sea." Todd and Abby guessed that made him very old and full of information.
