Swift single for X Factor winner

British X Factor winner Shayne Ward sold 313,784 copies of his single on its first day of release. That's My Goal has become Britain's third fastest-selling single of all time behind Elton John's Candle In The Wind and Evergreen by Will Young.

Retailers were swamped by fans. Around 250,000 copies were sold over the counter and the rest as internet downloads.

Evergreen, released after Young won Pop Idol in 2002, sold 403,027 copies in one day.

Gennaro Castaldo of HMV said: "That's My Goal is the second fastest-selling non-charity single of all time and it's telling that the one record to beat it was another product of a TV talent show."
