When Aaron Roberts placed a diamond engagement ring on his young partner's finger, he never imagined it would be as she lay dead in a funeral home.
Twenty-six-year-old Danielle McGrath was killed on her way to work in Sydney when a truck ran a red light.
According to AAP, her partner Roberts told a packed court room: "I lost the brightest part of my day, my best friend and my future wife," and revealed he was planning a surprise proposal to McGrath.
Instead, Roberts arrived to the scene of a truck versus pedestrian accident to see McGrath's handbag and belongings scattered across the road and a sheet covering his partner of almost six years.
He told the court room he would never forget the face of the police officer who confirmed it was McGrath.
The driver of the truck, David William Edward Grice, 60, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death after ignoring a red right arrow signal and driving through an intersection.
