A petition has been set up to save a part-pitbull puppy named Chip, after he was found in a rubbish bin in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn on Saturday morning.
Jonathan Robins, who found Chip on Williamson Ave, set up a petition on change.org in order to save the pup, currently sitting in a Henderson animal shelter, from his potentially tragic fate.
After hearing what might happen to Chip because of his breed, Mr Robins paid the dog a visit at the shelter, hoping to take him home.
"I'd have taken him home," he said, "I'd go and get him back if I could."
Robins's petition is being sent to the Auckland Council imploring that Chip be allowed to be adopted out to a loving family. Five-thousand signatures are being sought and just 1,210 are left to collect.
Adoptive hopeful, Koreen Morrell, says she was told by the shelter that Chip would likely be put down due to his breed. She said, "It's disappointing, he looked like a cute, beautiful puppy. I'm sure with the right upbringing he would have done well," she said. "I'm so gutted and heartbroken; his photos made me really want him."
