Review: Peter Eley
Wolfenstein has a lot to answer. It was the original shoot-em-up, designed for the Mac 2, and spawned Doom, Quake and dozens of similar games.
As if they weren't enough to keep bloodthirsty gamers in corpses, Grey Matter are soon to launch Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
The
enemy are still those blond Nazis but the plot is more subtle and involving than the original.
You land as part of a D-Day assault force and have to infiltrate the Nazi headquarters, rescue an agent and steal a code-cracking machine.
The game will take advantage of the ground-breaking Quake 3 engine, which promises some spectacular action.
And the cut scenes are splendid too, with the opening sequence reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan.
