Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford and an underwater ghost scared off mutants and animated pocket-monsters at the movies in North America.
Pfeiffer and Ford's supernatural thriller, What Lies Beneath, debuted as the weekend's top movie with $US30.1 million ($65.93 million), according to studio estimates.
X-men, the mutant superhero adventure that was last weekend's winner, slipped to second place with $US23.7 million.
The movie's three-day gross dropped 56 per cent from its $US54.5 million opening weekend.
Pokemon the Movie 2000, the second cartoon instalment based on the pocket-monster craze, opened at No 3 with $US21.5 million.
