Now you definitely won't be able to afford a house! Millennials fight back with new 'avolatte' trend

It's been said that young people can't afford million dollars houses because we're all running around buying $4 lattes and eating smashed avocado on toast every other day.

Well the Truman Cafe in, you guessed it, Melbourne, has come up with the ultimate four dollar F-you to those who propagate such economic theories: a latte made in an avocado.

This is either a clever marketing campaign wrapped up as a tongue-in-cheek satire about the housing affordability debate, or maybe we've just reached peak hipster. Or maybe both.

But judging from the cry-laugh emoji posted alongside a video of the caffeinated creation posted on Instagram last week which has since gone viral, it's probably all just a dumb joke.

In fact a barista at the cafe, Jaydin Nathan, confirmed the obvious to news.com.au that, yes, "it was actually just a joke".

"We weren't actually selling them but then someone came in today and wanted one," he said.

"I think it's ridiculous. It's literally coffee in a piece of rubbish."

The creation - dubbed the avolatte - has divided the ever opinionated internet with everyone from UK newspaper The independent to a news website in Cleveland tweeting about it.

Even if the Luddites at Merriam-Webster Dictionary aren't willing to get on board just yet.

Meanwhile others on social media are heralding the end of times, the death of culture itself ushered in by the thought of people trying to sip a latte out of an avocado skin.

But ironically (and yes the irony of it being ironic is perhaps the best part), all the attention it's received has meant the Truman Cafe has actually had to offer them up to customers.

"It's been getting more and more attention," Mr Nathan said. "I don't know, maybe we'll start" selling them, he joked.

So there you go, if you want to ease the pain of knowing you'll be renting for the rest of your life, head on down to Albert Park in Melbourne and annoy the barista so you can enjoy the height of frivolous spending by drinking a coffee out of a discarded scrap of fruit.
