Planned as the pilot for a new Twin Peaks-style TV series, the network said no, so Lynch reworked it into a movie. Like that mould-breaking show, expect random events and coincidences, offbeat humour, inexplicable behaviour and a lot of things that
won't make any sense to mainstream viewers who like cardboard characters and a story that begins, middles and ends.
It seems to be about a dark-haired amnesiac (Laura Elena Harring) who hooks up with a blonde wannabe actress (Naomi Watts) while trying to untangle her forgotten past.
As it's Lynch, almost anything can happen from there, and it does. So what's it all about, David? He says what this brooding essay of life in Hollywood means is less important than how it makes us feel.
Because the movie is the thing, there are virtually no special features on the DVD — not even a commentary track that might explain some of what's gone on.
