Mary Berry sends Twitter in to meltdown over bolognese recipe

Source: BBC. With double cream and white wine involved, Mary Berry confused watchers of her show with a strange bolognese.

With her fail-safe takes on culinary classics, Mary Berry's recipes are usually trusted implicitly by her fans.

However, her instructions for a "delicious" bolognese sauce have divided viewers of her new television programme because of the addition of two unusual ingredients: white wine and double cream.

She told those who tuned into her BBC 2 show Mary Berry Everyday to add wine, "white or red, whatever you've got to hand - although I really prefer to add white.

"There's never any left in our household. I might even have to open a bottle especially."

She also stopped partway to add cream, saying: "My secret is to make it even richer by adding double cream ... it just enriches it."

The former Great British Bake Off judge's twists on the recipe left some viewers horrified.

One said on Twitter: "Just watched a cooking programme where Mary Berry put white whine in Bolognese. Turned it off. #shudders."

"Dear Mary Berry, this is NOT ragu Bolognese. It's a nice tomato sauce though," added another.

In response to the cream addition, one viewer said: "Shocked and appalled about Mary Berry adding double cream to her bolognese."

Her dish was one of five demonstrated in Tuesday night's Hearty and Wholesome, the second episode in her latest BBC Two show.

It comes after Italian chef Antonio Carluccio said the British are ruining bolognese by putting herbs in it. Berry's recipe includes thyme, bay leaves and basil.

Carluccio said last year: "There was spaghetti bolognese, which does not exist in Italy. In Italy, it is tagliatelle bolognese, with freshly made tagliatelle and bolognese without any herbs whatsoever."

Jamie Oliver has also come under fire for an unorthodox version version of a classic, with his recipe for paella.

A Spanish journalist said it was "everything but paella".

Some were also affronted by Berry's salad recipe, featuring ingredients such as red and white quinoa, bulgar wheat and pomegranate molasses.

Among a number of posts accusing Berry of being everything from a hipster to overly politically correct, one person posted: "You know who has changed? Mary Berry. Pomegranate molasses I tell you."

One person joked: "Ahhh Mary Berry on #maryberryeveryday Quinoa and Pomegranate. You've lost it to the hipsters."

Commenting on the far from "everyday" ingredients, another added: "Mary Berry's cooking with quinoa and pomegranate molasses. We've hit peak Waitrosetastic."

But the complaints were still outweighed by Berry's legions of adoring social media fans.

As viewers watched her put on a beekeeping suit to learn how honey is made, one summarised: "Just watched a show where Mary Berry tried her hand at beekeeping. What's more comforting than that?"
