Kiwi Rongo Keene wins big at Australia's Strongest Man competition

A 29-year-old Kiwi has won Australia's Strongest Man competition.

Rongo Keene of Mohaka in Hawke's Bay pulled trucks, deadlifted a car, moved a 180kg stone and pressed a 140kg log to take the top prize in Melbourne.

"I've been spending years training for this moment... and all the hours and hard work," Keene said. "So when it came to getting the trophy, everything I visualised all came to reality. And the feeling that I got, I can't explain it, the feeling of joy."

According to Fairfax, Keene won 4 of the contest's six events held over 2 days.

Keene, familiar to Kiwis as a NZ Idol contestant, began training as a strongman four years ago.

He weighs 150kgs and trains five times a week, bench pressing around 220kg.

Keene's win qualifies him to compete at the Arnold Classic Australia in 2017 where the guest of honour will be Arnold Schwarzenegger.
