Bruce Willis was good in his last outing, the black comedy about hitmen, The Whole Nine Yards. Well, that's what I thought, even though a whole bunch of other critics and much of the public didn't agree. You win some ...
His new
one with Michelle Pfeiffer is sort of a comedy about a married couple who fight most of the time. They're the Jordans, Ben and Katie.
He's a TV comedy writer, she composes crossword puzzles (when they have a married couple in the movies, how come someone like Bruce Willis is never "an accountant," like my dad?) They have two kids, Erin and Josh.
Their marriage is a war zone. They fake happiness for the kids. The movie consists of flashbacks to their fights in an attempt to show What Went Wrong.
Rob Reiner, who has made many good commentaries about the human condition as actor (Postcards From The Edge, all the way back to Meathead in All In The Family) and as a writer-director (Stand By Me, Throw Momma From the Train), is an actor-writer-director here.
He rips himself off in a restaurant scene where Willis fakes Meg Ryan's diner orgasm in When Harry Met Sally ..., which Reiner directed.
Actually, no. Everyone is ripping everyone else off here. Especially the punter who puts down $7 to rent this.
